i will be getting to the region very shortly, president obama is traveling to the region, president obama feels very strongly and has asked me to focus on how we can strengthen our economic partnerships in latin american and central america, and i intend to do that -- in latten america and central america and i intend to do that. we talked today, at the beginning of my conversation, very first thing out of my mouth is we don't want to define this relationship with mexico and other countries in the context of security or counter narcotics trafficking. we want to define it much larger in the context of our citizens' economic needs and our capacity to do more on the economic frontier. i'm convinced that we're going to grow that relationship in terms of jobs. we talked about ways to link up, perhaps, ultimately with the transatlantic investment, trade partnership program. in the long run, it may be possible to find ways to strengthen both of us through those kinds of initiatives. and, of course, mexico is a partner in the transpacific partnership, so we are already growing this relationship,

seen budget increases under president obama. i'm not sure there's an argument about that one way or the other. with regards to flight delays, i'm with you. i'm not making the case that there aren't flights that are on time. i'm glad there are flights on time. as i noted right at the beginning of this segment, there were weather-related flight delays on monday. possibly yesterday. there were furloughs that took place and folks can't say if the delays were 50% furlough-related or weather-related. there are furloughs taking place right now and my guess is the furloughs will have an impact on air traffic so the air traffic controllers can maintain a safe air traffic system. host: "baltimore sun had this headline. what's your reaction? what can you tell us? guest: i don't know anything beyond what i read in the paper. the administration continues to cast some doubt on whether or not it did happen. it is, i think tash is ever confirmed to members of congress, probably one of those red lines that is going to force serious hand because

yesterday, president obama said it was shameful. and it was. i agree. make no mistake, this debate is not over. the fight is just beginning. i've spoken with the president. we agreed that the best way to keep working toward passing a -- in the check bill meantimep going forward with the people from colorado, virginia, newtown, and other places. we will make sure we are able to get something done. .enators look at negotiating nine president, we had bills that were not easy to vote on. but it was a good process to go forward and get some of these contentious amendments on both sides out of the way. or voted on rather. .e will come back to this bill i feel obligated to senator coburn on his amendment on background checks and a number of senators who will do a better job on the issue. we will have time to work on what people want to do before we come back to this. anwill give opponents opportunity to decide what you want to do when we get back on this to get their voices heard. this is the progress we have made on the bill. we passed a couple of amendments
